I had an absolutely wonderful dining experience at Kölblwirt. Their menu is diverse, serving regional dishes and has plenty of vegetarian options. The soup, main course (grilled beef), and dessert were all exceptional.
As for the service, it is way more five stars, due to the staff and chef exceptional kindness and friendliness. Several nearby places that were supposed to be open were unexpectedly closed, and one had a private function. With nowhere else open on a Sunday, I reached out to Gasthof Kölblwirt, even though their kitchen typically closed at 19:30. When I called, they said I could come, even though it was past the kitchen closing time. Despite my late arrival, they warmly welcomed me. I'm truly grateful for a delicious meal after a long day of hiking. Thank you for being hospitable and making me a memorable meal.
Location is perfect for hiking towards Hesshütte. Great views all around, rooms clean and comfortable, and restaurant serves delicious food. Overall it was a great experience, would definitely recommend and stay again whenever in the area! (2 night stay)
Amazing dishes, and they served us very close to closing time, when the kitchen was already supposed to be closed. Thanks for it, you saved us from starving to death :) Do try the Jäger soup, it is amazing.
Very nice restaurant with lovely and delicious vegetarian and even vegan dishes/options. Very friendly service and a beautiful restaurant from the inside as well as the terrace with a gorgeous view on the mountains.

An absolute hidden gem. Deep in the alps near the Gesäuse National Park is Kölblwirt in Johnsbach. Not only did we stay one night in their newer building (awesome) but the food was magnificent ! I had the Styria Beef steak which is a locally grown organic product. It was some of the tastiest steak I have ever had. Tender , juicy, well seasoned. And the next morning we hiked up to their other property, the alpine hut "Kölblalm" and saw where the animals were grazing freely. SO, the animals are treated very well, are raised with the mothers, never locked in some meat factory, and then processed on site, so farm to table is realized with the absolute minimal distance possible, a big plus for the environment. This place is off the beaten path but so worth the trip. The buffet breakfast that comes with the room was also very, very good.
Had an amazing beef goulash and delicious Kaiserschmarrn (actually the best of the three we tasted while in Gesäuse). The staff were very nice and friendly, service was very quick. Definitely recommend.
